Preston looted St. John’s Stone last night for Star Man Ali McCain – for just £ 1.2 million.
The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international has signed a four-year deal with Dipdale following a late-night action.
Preston initially had an offer of £ 800,000, which was rejected by the McDermott Park Board, but he returned with a better bid and that was enough to persuade Chairman Steve Brown to sell.
He spent the summer warning clubs interested in spending بن 1.75 million for Black Davison’s Colm Davidson from Blackburn in 1998 – but eventually failed to pay the required fee, despite McCain’s contract. Gone by 2023.
The Perth club had earlier lost captain Jason Kerr to Wagon in a ig 600,000 move when he came to see Charlton at the last minute.
And losing McCain so late in the window was a hammer blow for boss Colm Davidson.
After spending the day south of Kerr’s shock and taking off Brighton’s Lars Dendonker on season loan, he spent his day wandering around signing for a defender.
The 20-year-old will head north this week to contact his squad before his game against the Rangers after an international break.
And after confirming McCain’s departure just minutes before the deadline to submit the deal in England, Davidson borrowed St. Marine midfielder Camie McPherson.
Kerr’s loss will also leave a big gap in Colm Davidson’s team.
The former Scotland U21 stop came through the Saints Youth setup, who signed for Perth Club from the school, and will go down in history as their greatest captain since last season’s Hampden Braves.
Wagon has been plagued by off-field problems this season but has found stability under new owner Talal Mubarak, so it is now one of the most ambitious clubs in League One.

Davidson has now lost McCain, Kerr, Guy Melmid and Craig Conway from their Scottish Cup final pool, Ali Crawford, Eto Vertinen, Hayden Mرller, Race Devine and returning Glenn Middleton added.
Sean Rooney and Jamie McCart – the subject of Rotherham and Habs bidding – remained.
