Olivard tortured and ate a 6-year-old girl near a forest in India on Sunday. The baby was playing outside his house when the big cat dragged him away.
The attack took place in Qalandarpur village near Katarnia Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was the second such attack in the area in two days.
The girl was dragged by an animal while she was playing with a family member outside her home, a senior forest official said. The leopard grabbed the baby by the jaws and led him to a farm. Her family members could not save her, the regional media outlet. Zee News Is informed.
Hearing the screams of the affected family members, the nearby residents rushed to the spot. The boy’s father made several attempts to save the girl but failed. Police and forest officials also arrived at the scene and began searching for the girl.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Akashdeep Badhawan told Press Trust of India that his severed head was found in a forest area on Monday morning. However, they could not find the rest of the body.
Forest officials have set up cage nets after locals expressed concern about the presence of leopards in the area.
The latest incident comes just two days after a 7-year-old boy was killed by a leopard near the same area.
Forest officials have alerted the calm team after the latest incident. Authorities have urged villagers not to leave their homes at night and to keep children indoors.
There have been several deadly leopard attacks across the country in the past few months. Authorities say major cat attacks cause more than half of all deaths in human-wildlife conflict, but steps are being taken to deal with such cases.
