Why Newquay’s 11 Beaches Make It the Perfect Vacation Destination

Stunning blue skies overlooking Great Western Beach

Each of us has our own idea of the perfect beach. For some, this is a secluded cove, calm and unspoilt, with crystal clear waters just begging for snorkelling. For others, it’s the thrill of a bustling golden streak as far as the eye can see, laying down a blanket in a sandy slice of paradise before stepping into the surf.

Whether you’re a barefoot shore bum, an avid rock pool enthusiast, or a chilled kayaker, it’s impossible to find a great British beach holiday that will satisfy everyone.

At least that’s what we thought until we went to Newquay.

Tolcarn beach in Newquay with blue sky and sea and harbor view

A traffic jam full of my husband, two teenagers, body boards, a picnic basket, and all the rest essentials known to man, we arrived at 13 Palm View – a two-bedroom apartment in the heart of Newquay – yearning to see the sea.

Booked through Sykes Cottages, the location was just superb. Just a stone’s throw from the bustling city center with shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and vibrant nightlife, we felt completely at home in our spacious second floor apartment, our perfect home for a fun seven night stay.

With an open plan living area, compact well equipped kitchen and bistro furnished balcony, the apartment was a clean, comfortable and relaxing base.

Stunning blue skies over Lasty Glaze Beach

We were thrilled to be in the middle of the action and didn’t touch the car all week while surfing, cave snorkeling and panoramic walks on the stunning Southwest Coastal Trail.

Passing through the city in both directions, showcasing steep cliffs, rare wildlife and picturesque coves, the scenic site is perfect for hikers, nature lovers or those looking to explore the hidden gems of Cornwall’s gorgeous coastline.

It was during the walk on the rock that we hit the jackpot – beaches, beaches everywhere! Rocky, sandy, prosperous, tranquil, beachgoers are just waiting to be swallowed up.

Black Humphrey Rock, Whipsiderry Beach, Port

We started our shore excursion at the world famous Fistral Beach, a bustling surfers paradise with powerful high waves creating an unrivaled thrill factor. While enjoying professional training at a beach surf school, our just reward was to ride the same wave as a foursome – boundless fun and absolutely priceless!

Towen beach and harbor

If you think it’s exciting at the top of the waves, wait until you dare to dive under them! Towen Beach in downtown Newquay is the coolest way to see the coastline up close… by kayak. Blessed with 30-degree sunlight, we glided through the sparkling waters before snorkeling to explore an underwater world full of colorful fish and interesting marine life. Once dry, we headed to the nearby idyllic harbor for a glass of wine and a tasty pot of Moules Mariniere in the great outdoors – an absolute paradise.

By now, sun lounger connoisseurs, our top choice was Great Western Beach, a stunning stretch of golden sands on cliffs just seconds from our apartment. Although steep, the descent showed off unbeatable views and we enjoyed evening bodyboarding and drinks at a quaint little beach bar where, with salty hair and happy hearts, we watched the sun go down every night.

Although we are the most visited, these are just four of the 11 amazing beaches located near Palm View. For dog lovers, Watergate Bay is a dog paradise with over two miles of fine, golden sand, while beautiful Port Beach can be reached on a surreal walk across a rugged, heather-rich headland.

Needless to say, we worked up a great appetite suppressing three nights out of seven at Maharajah Indian Restaurant at the top of our street…because after trying their Jeera Gosht, we wanted to try every dish on the menu!

When it was time to head home, with film ripping and a kaleidoscope of epic memories, we agreed… the worst thing about Newquay was having to leave.
