Volcano turns a Canary Island paradise into a burning hell (VIDEO) – RT World News

With Cumbre Vieja spewing fresh lava flows eating up everything in its path, the volcanic apocalypse is in its third month.

Footage shot on Thursday shows a flow of molten rock slowly engulfing tree after tree. In recent weeks, the volcano has been producing several aftershocks on a daily basis.

Since the start of the eruption on 19 September, lava on the island of La Palma has covered about 1,073 hectares, breaking more than 2,650 buildings in its path, according to Copernicus, the European Union’s satellite monitoring system. More than 7,000 residents have been evacuated.

Apart from the obvious danger to any living beings around it, lava can also emit toxic gases when molten rock mixes with ocean water. On Monday, authorities ordered residents of three coastal towns to stay indoors as thick plumes of vapor were visible from the sea. The lockdown was lifted on Wednesday, however, after the volcano’s smoke had spread to a safe level. However, people living in the area are still advised to wear FFP2 masks.

The ash and smoke that Cumbre Vieja is sending into the air is making flights to La Palma unsafe, with the local airport closed Saturday through Thursday morning.

The eruption has also seen La Palma Island cover an additional 46 hectares as lava flowing into the ocean cools and freezes.
