Veterans resist pay cuts have dealt another blow to Barcelona’s financial crisis.

FC Barcelona are on a desperate mission to slash their wage bill next season to meet La Liga Santander’s pay cap regulations. Unfortunately, not all players are willing to accept further cuts after last season’s wage cuts.

Four experienced players have reportedly been approached by the club, and talks have begun this week. The club was waiting to confirm Lionel Messi’s pending decision to accept a 50% wage cut on the new deal before using it as an example before talking to other key players.

According to Barca Bluegreens, Gerard Pique, Sergei Roberto, and Sergio Busquets may face Messi’s lead, but Jordi Alba is reluctant to accept the new proposal. Last season, all of the club’s employees suffered pay cuts that were thought to be around 10%. Now, the club is considering a further 40% pay cut, the equivalent of a Messi deal.

Messi will not be able to rejoin the club if he fails to make room in his pay cap, and all five players have been asked to make a huge financial sacrifice to do so. The report states that Packet already has an “understanding” with the club, and that Biscuits is also inclined to accept the deal. Sergei Roberto is still attracting interest from outside, and could be offloaded if a good offer comes along.
