The WWF has sounded the alarm over the ‘big’ Black Sea oil move.

Russian scientists sounded the alarm over a large amount of oil in the Black Sea on Wednesday, the World Wildlife Fund said, adding that at least 100 tonnes of oil had left the city of Novorossiysk.

After discovering that the cunning was far greater than the initial report, investigators began investigating the pollution, and the General Prosecutor’s Office said authorities were studying the coast between the resort town of Anapa and Novorossiysk.

The area is home to some of the country’s best beaches and is popular with Russian tourists.

A leak occurred at a seaport near the southern port city over the weekend as the Greek-flagged Minerva Symphony was loading oil.

On Monday, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which controls the terminal, said the spill consisted of an estimated 200 square meters (2,150 square feet) of oil and It contains 12 cubic meters (423 cubic feet) of oil.

By early Sunday, the consortium said, “conditions had returned to normal” and there was no threat to the local population or wildlife.

The WWF and Russian scientists say the oil spill is more serious than initially reported and could harm the environment.

The conservation group said it had begun monitoring and found that by Sunday, Hoshyar had covered an area of 94 square kilometers.

Greenpeace, which said it was seeking more information from authorities, claimed the contaminated area could be up to 400,000 times larger than initially reported.

The WWF estimates that at least 100 tons of oil – “and more” – were released into the Black Sea.

“Despite the immediate involvement of rescue teams, the oil spilled over a large area,” the WWF said on Facebook, adding that marine wildlife could be affected.

Alexei Nizenkov, head of the WWF Russia’s responsible industry program, said the smart is flowing north, which has already reached Abrau Diorso – famous for its winemaking industry – and later to the Utrecht Nature Reserve. Can reach

“We can say that there is no objective information from the regulatory authorities on the scale of the outbreak,” he told AFP.

The Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences said it was also monitoring pollution and citing data from satellite imagery, said the oil had spread over an area of about 80 square kilometers.

“On August 8, the oil slick spread to the open sea, 19 kilometers off the coast,” the institute said in a statement.

Greenpeace Russia’s Victoria Glushenko said in a statement that if the space agency’s estimates were correct, “the spread would endanger the area’s fish, birds and marine ecosystems.”

“In addition, the health of people, including tourists, who find themselves in the polluted area, is at risk,” he added.

Staff at a dolphinarium outside the resort town of Anapa said they had seen pieces of oil on the surface and were working to protect their marine mammals.

“As soon as you put your hands in the water, the skin is covered in a greasy film,” Dolphinarium said on Instagram.

On Wednesday afternoon, Russian officials said they were reviewing the situation.

The head of the environmental care department, Rosprirodnazor Svetlana Radinova, said he was personally in charge of the case.

Nikolai Gorbin, the consortium’s general director, briefed Energy Minister Nikolai Sholginov on spill cleaning and containment work.

“The Minister stressed the need to verify information on the volume of oil emissions,” the energy ministry said.

In January, jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny launched an investigation into allegations that the Oligarchs had built a Black Sea palace for President Vladimir Putin. Putin has denied ownership of the mansion, which is south of Novorossiysk.
