In 1949, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) took 22 years to gain official UN recognition. Until 1971, Taiwan represented China in UN bodies. In October 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, which recognized the PRC as the only legitimate government of China:
