An alien light visible in the night sky is thought to be NASA’s rocket and satellite monitoring the Earth’s landscape.
Many people in the region saw the white light moving in the sky last night and asked what it was.
It is possible that what they saw was an Atlas V rocket that carried the Earth into orbit with the Landsat 9 satellite.
Landsat 9, a NASA satellite designed to monitor Earth’s surface, was successfully launched at 2.12pm EDT – 6.12pm in the UK – Monday at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
A joint mission with the US Geological Survey (USGS), Landsat 9 landed on the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Wendenberg’s Space Launch Complex 3E.
“NASA uses the unique assets of our own unique fleet, as well as instruments from other nations, to study its planet and its climate system,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
With the construction of the 50-year-old data bank, Landsat 9 will take this historic and invaluable global program to the next level.
“We look forward to working with our partners at the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of the Interior on Landsat Next, as we continue to work to understand our planet.”
