The WHO would have thought that the student fashion show could be such an important moment in British history.
But when Kate Middleton catwalked at the University of St. Andrews in a black dress, Prince William said: “Wow, Kate is hot!” Everything changed between the couple. By the end of the night, a deep friendship had turned into romance, and Kate and Wells had taken the first step towards becoming our future King and Queen.
Even so, Kate’s appearance at the charity fashion show could have been very different – student designer Charlotte Todd wanted her to wear a diaphragm skirt with a jumper, but Kate pulled out a sweater, preferred it and used it as a dress. Liked to wear William, who paid 200 200 for a VIP seat on FROW, was impressed.
Two decades of rapid growth and the couple is widely regarded as the future of the kingdom – more than ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle controversially moved to the United States last year.
William and Kate, who celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in April, have been a constant source of comfort to the public – with their three children George, eight, Charlotte, six, and three-year-old Louis – throughout the epidemic. ۔ It’s easy to see that Kate has always been with William, but how did a middle-class girl from Home Counties bring down Britain’s most qualified bachelor?
The fashion show was instrumental in changing the dynamics of their relationship. The couple met 20 years ago next month as they walked through the gates of Scotland’s oldest university. From the beginning it was inevitable that their paths would cross – not only were they both studying art history, but they also lived in the same hall of residence, St. Salvator’s Hall. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person.
Kate, 39, later revealed, “I turned bright red and closed in a way. But gradually their friendship spread to common interests. They were both raised in a rural environment – Kate of Berkshire, Bucklebury.” William and I loved our father’s highgrow estate in Gloucestershire – and the countryside (a condition of being fit in the royal family, where hunting, shooting, fishing, polo watching and racing are common).
He was a student at both Home County Special Schools – Kate Pengburn, St. Andrew’s Prep School in Berkshire, and later went to Marlborough College, Wiltshire, while William was in Ludgrave, Berkshire, then Eaton – and a passion for sports. Shared In fact, Kate applauded William for the first time when he was nine years old and playing against each other in a hockey match.
As a student of St. Andrews, they often swam together in the university pool or woke up early in the morning before the lecture. Kate, a hardworking student, helped William when he missed classes to let him copy his notes.
At first, their relationship was purely Platonic because the two were meeting other people – William met Carly Macy Birch in a college drama audition, while Kate’s boyfriend was a fourth-year law student. Rufus-Isaac, founder of the ethical fashion label Beowulf.
But eventually the relationship ended and she became Kate William’s confidante – she was the one who persuaded him to stay at the university when he was thinking of going abroad and he advised her to go for geography instead. What he did
She was there to listen and support – even protecting her from unwanted attention. At a party, he was politely trying to shake a fan when Kate helped him by putting his arms around him and giving the impression that he was his girlfriend. As the girl disappeared, William met her: “Thank you very much.”
“Kate was the only girl in the room who could do that, and William was allowed to do that,” one observer noted.
However, it was only after the night of the fashion show, on April 7, 2002, that the romance unfolded – and even then they went far enough to keep it a secret. William was particularly keen not to rush into a serious relationship, recalling the advice his mother, Princess Diana, had given him shortly before his death in 1997 that he should make time for himself.
“Whatever you do, first make sure the person you marry is your best friend,” he told 15-year-old William.
By the end of her first year, Kate was invited to share a flat with William and two other friends – Etonian Fergus Boyd, now the godfather of Prince George, and Olivia Blaisedale, the daughter of an army officer. The four moved to 13a Hope Street in the middle of the city, where they had a regular dinner.
Property developer Michael Chong, who played rugby with William, said: “He never showed any love in public. Kate was good to him. She was loyal and didn’t gossip. Will was naturally Gregory. There was, but Kate was short and she hated taking pictures of herself. Will would take some of his friends for a shoot.
“He would go to Norfolk on the weekends and bring back the game that Kate would cook for dinner parties.”
It was during their third year, when they moved to a 400-acre farmhouse on the outskirts of St. Andrews, that William and Kate eventually moved out. While skiing at the Swiss resort of Clusters, the couple was pulled together on a ski lift and ended up on the next page.
A year later, in 2005, he returned to Clusters when William revealed his true intentions while enjoying an April ski in a nightclub – a week before his father’s wedding to the Duchess of Cornwall, a journalist. Asked him if he was there. The second royal wedding will be “I’m too young,” he replied. “I don’t want to get married until I’m at least 28 or 30 years old.”
Six years later – and two months embarrassed by their 29th birthday – in 2011 the couple finally tied the knot. During this time Kate received constant attention and earned the nickname “Veti Katie”. There was also a very public breakup in April 2007 when William, feeling pressured for an engagement, chose to end the relationship during a tense phone call.
However, despite dancing at the table in Mehki’s nightclub, screaming “I’m free” shortly after the split, he soon regretted his decision.
Royal expert Katie Nicole said: “They secretly met in a pub near High Grove, where William told her he wanted to come back together. Kate didn’t want to hurry. She was badly injured and William Told him he needed some time.
On June 9, 10 weeks after his breakup, Army Officer William invited Kate to a rogue “Freakin Naughty” mess party at his barracks in Dorset to celebrate the end of his gruesome course as a military leader. ۔ By the time of the Concert for Diana, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of his mother’s death in July 2007, they were back together – and William had promised that they would eventually get married.
Considering their breakup during an ITV interview to celebrate their engagement in November 2010, William said: “We were both very young, we were both looking for ourselves and had different roles – but he Well done. “
Three years later, he proposed to Kate on vacation in Kenya, slipping Princess Diana’s engagement ring into his bag.
“I had some plans to show off my romantic side,” he said in the interview. “I’ve been taking him with me for about three weeks now and I literally won’t let him go.” Wherever I went, I was catching it, because I knew I would be in so much trouble if it disappeared! This is my mother’s engagement ring, so I thought it was great because obviously she wouldn’t be here to share any fun and excitement. That was the way to be closest to me.
“It was very romantic,” his bride laughed. “There’s a real romance.”
A decade after their marriage, Cambridge is closer than ever. Like any married couple, they have faced their trials – including the long haul when William was working as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot.
It also took Kate a while to find her foothold in the royal family. And, of course, raising three kids isn’t easy – especially during the past year, and William joked about how much he struggled with home schooling.
He recently went through his biggest upheaval yet to come out of the family of Prince Harry and Meghan, as well as his explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. But in the midst of all this, Kate has been William’s rock, guiding her after the brothers’ relationship deteriorates.
Cambridge knows that the future of the kingdom rests firmly on their shoulders and that the couple is under pressure to change the royal family’s opinion at home and abroad. Despite their struggles, they have never set foot wrong and their partnership seems to be stronger and more united.
And in a passionate celebration of their 20-year friendship, they returned earlier this year to where it all began – St. Andrews. They last visited the university in February 2011, leading to their marriage.
As well as meeting current students, they raced against each other in small windmills on West Sands Beach. It got so hot, Kate teased, “Come on, Grandpa!” On her husband, who was following. But it was William who succeeded.
“William and Kate were asking about what the university has done for our well-being. They were alumni here. You could tell they had a home,” said Joe Horsnell, a 22-year-old university student. It feels like coming.
