Britney Spears’ father has filed a petition to end the conservatism that has controlled the singer’s life for the past 13 years.
On Tuesday, Jamie Spears, 69, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking termination of the legal order. In 2008, Mr. Spears founded the Conservativeship, which controls the pop star’s life and money.
In an unexpected turn of events, he said, things have changed in recent months. “If Ms. Spears wants to end the conservatism and believes she can take care of her own life, Mr. Spears thinks she should have the opportunity.”
Mr Spears said in a statement that he believed the judge should now seriously consider whether the conservatism was no longer needed.
Pop star fans are reacting to this news. With those behind the ongoing #FreeBritney campaign, which has long sought to free Spears from its conservatism, rejoice at the news as the end seems imminent.
Fan Ryan Miller tweeted, “This is great news for the #FreeBritney Movement and will create a much-needed dialogue on how conservatism works in the United States.”
“Britney is going to be free after 13 years,” wrote another, while another fan commented: “Britney deserves to be free.”
“It’s finally happening!” Another fan tweeted.
Matthew Rosengart, the pop star’s lawyer, told Surgery UK in a statement. He described the development as a “massive legal victory” and “accuracy” for Britney Spears.
