  • ‘Software bug or human error’

According to analyst Jack Moore, the latest outage is likely to be the result of a software bug or human error.

“The blockade is growing in volume and can often point to a cyber attack, but it can lead to confusion at first,” said Moore, an expert at cybersecurity firm ESET.

“Web blackouts are mostly caused by discovered software bugs or even human error.

“Although they are increasing in frequency and require more failures on the spot, these problems are becoming more and more difficult to predict because it was never thought of before.”

  • Not the first time

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp typically experience minor individual shutdowns, but it’s rare for apps to fall short at the same time.

They run on shared infrastructure, and other Facebook proprietary services are also shut down, including the Oculus website and Facebook Workplace.

The previous large-scale web blackout in March 2021 and July 2019 has taken all the company’s services offline for hours at a time.

On these occasions, Facebook has been accused of technical glitches from time to time.

  • Facebook is working to get things back to normal

Andy Stone, Facebook’s head of communications, tweeted: “We know some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products.

“We are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

  • WhatsApp is not sending messages.

WhatsApp messages are not reaching their recipients, the sent text sits next to them with a clock icon to indicate that they have not been sent.

It is not clear what is behind the massive closure.
