David Tennant will play former Russian Alexander Litvinenko in the new ITV drama.

Actor David Tennant will play former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in a new ITV drama.

Mr Litvinenko died in London in 2006 after being poisoned by a rare radioactive substance.

“In late 2006, Alexander Litvinenko was a living witness to his own assassination,” said Latvianenko screenwriter George Key.

“He spent the day of his death handing over to the Metropolitan Police what happened to him.

It took the police and their notable widow, Marina Litvinenko, a decade to substantiate their claims.

“His talent, hard work and bravery are what make him an important story of our time, but also an honor to be written.”

Actress Margarita Leviva will play the role of Marina.

Latvianenko is being formed in collaboration with “several key figures in the investigation and subsequent public inquiry,” ITV said in a statement.

The program is written by George Key and produced by Executive Patrick Spence.

Executive producer Patrick Spence said: “It’s an honor to be able to tell a story about a family and a police team once in a career that showed so much courage and resilience that it impressed us all.”
