A performer at Moscow’s famous Bolshoi Theater was killed by a falling piece of scenes on stage in front of a terrifying audience.
Eugene Kolish, 37, was crushed by a support during a set change during an opera performance on Saturday, Theater said.
The theater spokesman added: “The opera was stopped immediately and the audience was told to leave.
Footage of the incident allegedly showed the panicked staff on stage begging them to pick up the falling decorations quickly.
Bolshoi, one of Russia’s most famous theaters, said the incident took place during a set change at Russian musician Nikolai Rumsky Korsakov’s Opera Sudko.
The stunned audience at first thought the accident was a staged trick before they realized what had happened when someone on stage “called an ambulance, there was blood.”
Moscow investigators say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Kolesh’s death.
Interfax News quoted a source as saying that the actor was crushed by a ramp while changing scenes.
Sources told RIA and TASS news agency that he was killed by a falling piece of decoration.
According to local media, Mr. Klush has been working in the theater since 2002.
Bolshoi has suffered in the past.
In July 2013, a senior violinist died after falling into an orchestra’s pit.
