Barcelona are close to agreeing a new deal with forward Usman Dembele following developments in recent weeks. The Catalan club has preferred to negotiate a deal with France International, although the player is currently sidelined due to a knee injury.
Dembele’s contract expires in 2022 and Barcelona have no plans to leave him on a free transfer next summer. If he attracts a bid next summer, he wants to tie him to a long-term deal that will protect his value.
According to the Spanish publication Sport., Barcelona have made progress in negotiations and are close to reaching an agreement on an extension. The club was at loggerheads with French agents. Regarding the offer on the table, the latter is looking at a possible free transfer in 2022, which will pay Dembele a hefty signing fee.
However, in recent weeks, both parties have made progress and Barcelona are now confident that Dembele will put the pen to paper on fresh terms. It is expected to be a short-term deal by the end of the 2023 or 2024 season, which will help Barcelona reduce its wages slightly to help it reduce its rising wage bill.
Dembele is unlikely to return to the football pitch until at least November after suffering a knee injury during the European Championships in June. If he does not agree to a deal before his return, he can wait until January and start pre-deal negotiations with clubs outside Spain.
According to Spanish media AS.One club in particular is hoping Dembele will not extend his contract with Barcelona – Serie A giants Juventus. The Italian club want the French forward to sign a free transfer and are rumored to be trying to disrupt negotiations between Dembele and the Catalan giants.
