FC Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman will work with the La Liga centurion and the default roster when UEFA Champions League action returns next week. Apart from losing a handful of players due to last minute exit deals, the team has also suffered several injuries. The latest blow came from Sergino Dest, who suffered a right ankle sprain during the international break.
Dest was part of the United States national team that took to the field against Canada on 5 September. Barcelona was immediately notified of the injury, but the club’s medical team could not review his condition until Wednesday. Did not return
The club then issued an official statement saying: “This is a minor injury, but its availability will be determined by how it develops.”
Although the injury does not appear to be serious, Dest is unlikely to be available for Barcelona’s next match against FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage on 14 September. It was originally scheduled for September 11, but was rescheduled due to the late arrival of South American players.
In addition to Dest, captain Gerard Pack is out due to injury. He may have been seen surfing the weekend with his wife, Shakira, and their children, instead of being careful about escalating the calf injury.
New signing Sergio Aguero has yet to make his debut for the club after suffering an injury in the pre-season. Both he and Usman Dembele are not expected to return until October. Meanwhile, Samuel Amati and Ansu Fatti are just in the process of rejoining the club after their long injuries.
The blow of the fresh injury leaves Coyman with even less options for his starting lineup, and it remains to be seen how creative he will be.
