Barcelona have pulled the plug on a possible swap deal in which Antoine Griezmann, returning to Atletico Madrid, was seen heading in the opposite direction to Saul Neguis.
The Catalan club is anxious to remove the French forward from the wage bill this summer, and is hoping to sign a deal with its former employers. Griezmann and Nguyen gave the green light to the move But despite ongoing talks, the two clubs have failed to reach an agreement.
According to Mando Deportivo, Barcelona were not happy with the terms of the offer as they were expecting to receive more than just Nguyen as part of the deal. La Liga companies expected to charge Atletico or more players as part of the deal, but the reigning champions were reluctant to offer more.
The salaries of both players were also an issue. Griezmann is currently the highest earner in Barcelona and Atletico were unwilling to pay the full amount without agreeing to bear some of Barcelona’s burdens. Nguyen also made it clear that he would not cut his salary if he moved to Camp Nou this summer.
Barcelona are aware that the transfer of Griezmann will go a long way in helping them sign Lionel Messi’s new contract, while they will also be able to register other new signatories. It is unclear whether Griezmann will stay in the coming weeks or look for another sweater. France International is expected to return to pre-season training on Tuesday after a holiday following Euro 2020.
Meanwhile, Nguyen’s agent Jonathan Barnett seems to have overcome the Barcelona stalemate. As per Francis Aguilar of Mando DeportivoThe Atletico midfielder’s representative is in high-level talks with Manchester United over a possible summer move.
“While Italy and Barہa are embroiled in negotiations for Sailor Eggs and Anton Griezmann, their managers, the Englishman Jonathan Barnett, are pushing for negotiations with Manchester United,” Aguilar wrote.
When Barnett was recently asked about Nguyen’s future, he was unexpected, saying that nothing had been decided and that Nguyen would do what was best for him. In addition to United, the Premier League organization Liverpool has also been linked to the Spanish International initiative.
Barnett said, “Nothing has been decided. Saul has all the options to leave. Dario AS. “Saul will do with his future what is best for Saul.”
